A few weeks ago, we covered the surprise announcement from Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer that company employees would no longer be able to work from home. This encompasses every worker with few exceptions. Needless to say, that has not gone over well with the staff and many IT experts and bloggers have voiced their disapproval of the move.
However, it has raised an interesting debate in the IT channel about the validity of working at home. There is no denying that technology has advanced to the point where mobile devices, cloud applications and multiple communication tools make it easier than ever to be productive outside of the office. The flip side is that there is a loss of collaboration can occur when an entire workforce is not sitting in the same room.
A recent InformationWeek article spoke with several IT leaders and CIOs about the topic and where they stood. Many of them expressed their biggest concern of finding, grooming and keeping talented people around and how telecommuting has become a big part of that.
"You are going to lose some people. For some people, having the ability to work at home is important to them because peoples' lives are complicated and the more flexibility they have, the happier they will be and the longer they will stay," Martha Heller, the president of a CIO and IT leader recruiting firm, told the news source.
The only trend that became evident is that there is no trend. Every CIO and employee has a different feeling about how important working from home is to them. Any blanket decision is going to be met with opposition. Companies need to be aware of this and, if possible, ensure they have a way for employees to be productive while working from outside the four walls of the office.
