While the IT skills gap has organizations struggling to find the right professionals to run daily tasks that would improve their operations, it has created an additional problem that could have dramatic effects. With the increased reliance on the latest innovations to do everyday tasks, it's more critical than ever for business to ensure that the network and data they use is secure, but the skills gap is making it difficult to find the right IT professionals to do that.
A recent Search Security article features an interview with Jon Ramsey, the chief technology officer of the VAR SecureWorks. According to Ramsey, for every 20 open security positions at the company, there is only one qualified candidate in the IT channel.
"The people who need security professionals cannot find them," said Ramsey. "And if the company is not a security business, it is hard to justify paying a premium for people who are not core."
The article also features an interview with former CIA employee and cyber security specialist James Gosler. He said that in 2012 there were no more than 1,000 people with the necessary skills to handle tough cyber security tasks. This is a problem because at least 30,000 professionals are needed by government organizations and agencies alone.
The Information System Security Certification Consortium puts the demand for cyber security professionals as high as 300,000, with demand increasing by 12 percent annually.
What is clear is that the need for IT security professionals is high and organizations are going to be looking toward VARs and MSPs to handle the challenges that arise when they cannot find these professionals themselves.
