Anyone who has experience with military personnel returning home and transitioning back into civilian life knows that it can be a frustrating time, especially when it comes to the job market. While it cannot be denied that ex-military personnel have unique skills and real world experience, they often find themselves struggling to find job opportunities.
A recent article from Channelpro SMB examined why companies should start hiring veterans. The piece mentions the "VOW to Hire Heroes Act" which was signed into law by President Obama in 2011. It is a challenge by the United States government to hire or train 100,000 veterans by the end of 2013.
However, hiring is easier said than done. According to Emily King, the author of "Field Tested: Recruiting, Managing and Retaining Veterans" and vice president of military transitions at The Buller Group LLC, many veteran's' skills are lost in the transition. Civilian and military lingo can differ greatly and if a veteran has never worked outside of the service, it can be frustrating to adapt. The skills that some former military personnel possess, especially in fields like health care and the IT channel, can help close the skills gap that has become a growing problem.
"The military is at the forefront of the development of a lot of different types of technology, and if they're not at the forefront of conceptualizing and developing it, then they're using it," King says.
Hiring veterans can be a sound business decision, especially if they have the skills and intangibles that help your business succeed.
