The topic of consumerization in the IT channel has become a favorite debate among technology professionals for some time. With the excitement of new gadgets running wild, there is also a concern as to what this could mean for the IT jobs market.
A recent CITEworld article examined this idea to see if there is any legitimacy to it.
"As companies close their data centers and move many tasks to the cloud, it would seem logical that IT would require fewer workers, but it's not necessarily a zero sum game," the article reads. "What tends to happen instead is that requirements shift to other places, just as they always have with technology changes in IT."
What this means is there is going to be a shift in the skill sets that technology professionals are looking for. This doesn't happen overnight, however, as there is typically a long period of overlap as one system is replaced with another. So, as more companies are looking to embrace the cloud and employee-owned mobile devices, moving away from physical servers and computer networks, IT departments will need to incorporate these new skills while still understanding the legacy system until it is fully unplugged.
This is not as easy as it seems, as many organizations find themselves in trouble when it comes to learning new skills or finding impactful talent that possesses it.
