It is impossible to deny the fact that the tablet has helped elevate the importance of mobile devices in the corporate world. With its larger screen, when compared to the smartphone, it makes a variety of business tasks more manageable, and with the continued evolution of functionality, there is no telling how deeply the tablet will penetrate into the business sector.
One fact to remember, however, is that these devices are helping cause the downfall of the PC. According to a report by Gartner, tablet shipments are projected to increase 53.4 percent by the end of the year. The PC, by comparison, will drop 11.2 percent from last year.
Despite the numbers, overall technology spending on PC, tablets and smartphones is projected to grow 4.5 percent.
"While consumers will be bombarded with ads for the new ultramobile devices, we expect their attention to be grabbed but not necessarily their money," said Carolina Milanesi, research vice president at Gartner, in a statement. "Continuing on the trend we saw last year, we expect this holiday season to be all about smaller tablets as even the long-term holiday favorite — the smartphone — loses its appeal."
This shift in the IT channel will cause companies to re-evaluate their IT departments. New talent with specific skill sets is required to successfully manage these systems.
