In the business landscape, there are countless IT projects being implemented by companies of all sizes. Unfortunately for these companies, 50 percent of those will fail in some way or another.
At least that is the finding of a new study by cloud portfolio management provider Innotas that found half of all IT projects launched in 2013 failed to meet stay under budget or be completed on time. The main reason for this is the lack of resources and direction during these projects — something project managers are supposed to manage.
According to Innotas CEO Kevin Kern, project managers find themselves in the middle of the storm trying to keep every aspect of the project on track. There are so many responsibilities that the job description gets blurred and it is easy for various components to be overlooked.
On top of that, while C-level executives understand the importance of delivering solutions and applications successfully, the perception as a cost center has not changed. The belief is that IT can get bloated quickly and need to be slashed just as fast.
"Consolidation and cost-cutting have really taken their toll, and there's not a lot of incentive for businesses to get beyond cost-cutting. That's the wrong conversation to have. Relative to the [Innotas] survey, that says we have a bunch of failing projects, but we don't have the people or resources to manage them properly," Kern says.
