It is a practice that dates back centuries. The apprenticeship has been used by those wanting to learn the ropes of a highly skilled position. It gives those in charge another body that can be trained in the right way to do the job and offers those being trained the opportunity to gain valuable real world lessons from an experienced professional. While it is something that many trade professions have embraced, the IT channel is adopting this practice as a way to overcome the skills gap.
According to a recent article from Tech Republic, the number of IT apprenticeships has increased rapidly in recent years. Since 2012, nearly 24,000 people have started down this path in the U.K. and there are over 700 live vacancies.
"Employers have long been critical of the skills of IT graduates and have been demanding more business-ready recruits: IT apprenticeships – which offer a job combined with a skills development program designed by the employer – may be one way to solve the issue," the article reads.
The piece goes on to say that this is one way to alleviate the hole that the industry put itself in. By offshoring many tasks that could be handled by entry level employees, organizations can find themselves in trouble when senior IT staff starts moving on with no one to replace them waiting in the wings.
Having impactful IT talent is something every organization needs to have on its mind. VAR Staffing helps technology solution providers identify and recruit the talent that can make a dramatic impact on the success of an organization.
