One of the biggest challenges that technology departments face today is the growing skills gap that exists in the candidate pool. With how quickly tech is evolving and the way that more organizations are relying on the latest devices and services, employees with the right set of skills are becoming harder to find and business are suffering for it. Many organizations are turning to the VAR and MSP community for support.
According to a recent study from the Brookings Institution, opportunities in the STEM field (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) take nearly twice as long to fill than those in the non-STEM fields. The report found that it takes an average of 50 days to fill a STEM job and just over 30 for non-STEM openings.
Jonathan Rothwell, a Brookings researcher, said in the report that the need for the right talent is hurting businesses as the price tag goes up and quickly evolving companies are slowed down because they lack the needed skills.
"Each day a job goes unfilled costs the enterprise the value of that potential worker, and this cost is higher for higher-paying and highly skilled positions, even as the cost of hiring a skilled worker who is the 'wrong fit' is also higher," Rothwell said. "Employer surveys report large costs from hiring difficulty, including overworked current staff, lower quality output, loss in revenue, and delays in product delivery."
It is becoming increasingly difficult to hire the impactful talent that is needed to conquer the growing technology challenges. VAR Staffing helps IT integrators identify and recruit the best candidates for any opening.
