In 2015, Millennials became the single largest component of the workforce in the US. And as Bob Dylan famously wrote back in 1964; The Times They Are a-Changin’. But I do think it is a pretty safe bet Bob was not thinking about the future Millennial generation when he wrote the verses.
One point is very clear however; Our future leadership clearly resides in the lap of Millennials.
I came across a recent blog posted on the C12 Group web site, addressing change leadership and business dynamics. C12 Group just happens to be a leading Christion CEO forum (VAR Staffing is not endorsing one religious view versus another, merely pointing out the business model of C12 Group), and written by someone I consider a good friend, Tom Hawes. So what were the main points of importance to Millennials as it applies to leadership?
- They want to lead – and be transformational in the process
- They thrive in collaborative settings
- They are not as overtly concerned about the bottom line
- They value work-life balance
- They bring a lot to the table, and are not shy about breaking the status quo
- They want both training and mentorship
- They want management to encourage collaboration to bring out the best in everyone
So do these characteristics spell good news or bad news for the VAR / MSP community? For companies owned and managed by the Baby Boomer generation (and even Gen X for that matter), the sooner they pay attention and respond to the inevitable change in leadership trends and approach, the better off they are most likely to be. That does not necessarily mean a company’s culture or business model must radically change, but it does mean many of the traditional business approaches will not be as effective going forward.
